Judge Michele “Shell” Mercer has devoted her professional life to serving families, protecting children, and strengthening the justice system through experience, fairness, and compassion. With more than two decades of family law experience, Judge Mercer brings a steady hand and a deep understanding of the real-world issues that come before Nevada’s Family Court.

Prior to being elected to Department Z of the Family Division, Judge Mercer built an impressive record of courtroom and community service. She served as a pro-tem hearing master for the District Court and as a hearing master for the Department of Family Services, helping guide families through sensitive and high-stakes legal matters with professionalism and care.

Judge Mercer’s dedication to public service extends well beyond the courtroom. She has volunteered her time to support young people in our community as a truancy diversion judge, working directly with youth and families to encourage accountability and better outcomes. She also served as a consumer member of the Chiropractic Physicians’ Board of Nevada, contributing to public oversight and consumer protection in state government.

A strong believer in education and mentorship, Judge Mercer has served as an instructor for the UNLV paralegal program as well as at the community college level, helping prepare the next generation of legal professionals. Her commitment to volunteer service has been recognized through inclusion on the Pro Bono Honor Roll, reflecting her longstanding dedication to serving those most in need.

Before taking the bench, Judge Mercer practiced law for more than 22 years, primarily focused on family law, where she gained extensive experience handling complex matters involving children, custody, protection, and family stability.

Judge Mercer earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin and her Juris Doctorate from St. Mary’s University School of Law. Her career reflects a consistent mission: to deliver justice with integrity, treat every person with respect, and ensure the Family Court remains focused on what matters most—fairness, safety, and the wellbeing of children.
